The recently-concluded United Nations Conference on the Oceans was a key moment for reaffirming collective priorities in the face of global maritime challenges For France Filière Pêche (FFP), this event was a key opportunity to emphasize a core belief: scientific research must underpin every decision regarding fish stocks and marine ecosystem management.
Since its creation in 2012, FFP has followed a clear guiding principle: better knowledge leads to better fishing practices. This philosophy is reflected in our ongoing support for research. Over 230 research projects have been funded, primarily targeting resource assessment and the reduction of fishing impacts.
To showcase these efforts, FFP is publishing a supplementary issue highlighting several flagship projects, featuring insights from professionals in the fisheries sector.
Key Initiatives Covered :
- Trawling innovation: multiple new techniques are in development
- Ship decarbonization: a high-priority environmental initiative backed by a promising project
- Cetacean bycatch: ongoing efforts after years of research to understand and mitigate the issue
- Climate change impacts: with a focus on the English Channel/North Sea region
- Seafood traceability: increasingly important to meet consumer transparency demands
Convinced that research is an essential lever for ensuring the sustainability of the French fishing industry, France Filière Pêche is pursuing its commitment to an activity that is nourishing, responsible, and strategic for both food security and the vitality of coastal regions.
